Is it necessary to wear bra all the time? Also how to know that you are wearing the right kinda bra?
Is it necessary to wear bra all the time?
By no means, actually it’s not necessary to wear bras at all.
Studies have shown improved comfort, and beyond in some cases, in women who stopped wearing bras. One thing to keep in mind though: if you are not used to going braless, it will initially be uncomfortable, especially in sports(as many studies have found; those of them that were long term studies have found something more however - in the long term it was yet another area of improvement). No adverse effects were observed in women after they stopped wearing bras in the long run. For premenopausal women regularly doing sports, after they completely stopper wearing bras, minor appearance improvement was observed additionally(lift, stretch-marks fading).
Going braless is better therefore, however it’s not cancer-cure better. Popular but mistaken belief maintains that wearing bras is causing breast cancer. We currently have no reason to believe it. There were correlational studies that have found it, but for example didn’t control for diet. There was also a study concluding there is no difference in cancer risk between groups, they however didn’t have any braless condition, instead used dose response approach(one of the previous studies partially did the same, so they overlap at least to that degree and yet ended up with different results). Consensus now is that there is no reason to believe in the “bras causing cancer” story.
Wrapping up - bras aren’t necessary at all. Won’t hurt much either, especially if fitted well. Better off without them? Yes. But do women look better without bras? No direct study available, but one indirect result can be interpreted this way as similar effect was found to what is believed to cause the attractiveness of the red dresses. May be perceived as more attractive by men, yes but a more direct study is needed to know for sure. Also it’s worth knowing that not everyone is attracted to large breasts, so if bras are used to augment breasts visually, this is not the best strategy, look up studies on impact of “resource security” and “sociosexual orientation” on men’s preferences of female breasts’ size for more infomation.
Also how to know that you are wearing the right kinda bra?
If you don’t feel confident about fitting it yourself, you can either refer to bra fitting guidelines available online, preferably the source documents with bra fitting standards described precisely; or if that doesn’t feel clear you can always use professional bra fitting service so the fitting process will be done by someone else without your having to learn how to do it yourself at all.
I will include one research paper here which contains an observational fit assessment tool you can use immediately. They used Triumphs guidelines. The tool is contained within the second attachment. Instructions how to use it are presented in the research paper.
Breast size, bra fit and thoracic pain in young women: a correlational study
BTW: this incidentally is the study from which the common misconception about the “80% women wearing wrong bra size” emerged. As you can see inside this is not a representative sample neither for healthy women nor for the general population of a couple billions of them. Inside they refer to 2 previous “studies” with similar results. The first one used a non-representative sample as well. While the second is not a study on the matter but included a citation within which someone referred to a popular opinion that “70% of women wear wrong-sized bra”; additionally the very same source states the following: "Although it may seem paradoxical to ask women what their correct bra size is when it is often reported that 70% or more wear the wrong-sized bra, experience has taught me that it is the traditional measuring system that is faulty, not the judgement of the women who are wearing the garments.". I leave it to you to decide.
